- Grade 6
Math 6. This curriculum links to and builds on students’ elementary mathematics experiences, provides for the acquisition and mastery of essential skills, and introduces new concepts or revisits familiar ones in greater depth. There is a strong emphasis on rates and ratios, understanding of rational numbers, basic algebraic expressions and equations, statistical thinking, area and volume.
- Grade 7
Math 7. Areas of focus for this course are: applying proportional relationships; developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and linear equations; solving problems involving scale drawings, informal geometric constructions, area, surface area and volume; and drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
Pre-Algebra 7. This course differs from Math 7 in that it includes 8th grade content in addition to the topics listed above; therefore, a faster pace for instruction and learning is required. Areas of focus for this course are: applying proportional relationships; developing understanding of rational number operations, exponents, and linear equations; solving problems involving scale drawings, informal geometric constructions, similarity, congruence, area and volume; and drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
- Grade 8
Math 8. Areas of focus for this course include: solving linear equations and systems; using functions to describe quantitative relationships; analyzing geometric figures using distance, angles, similarity and congruence; and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
Algebra I – Grade 8. This is a full-year, formal Algebra I course for 8th graders. It differs from the high school Algebra I course in that it includes 8th grade content; therefore, a faster pace for instruction and learning is required. Students extend their understanding of basic algebraic concepts and acquire both skills and the conceptual foundation needed for advanced mathematics. They learn to use symbolic reasoning, equations and functions to represent, analyze and interpret situations and apply algebraic reasoning to solve problems.
